India Weather Today News Highlights:  A cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge into northeast and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal today according to the IMD. Meanwhile the weather agency has predicted heavy rainfall likely over Odisha, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu on October 1.

The southwest monsoon season over India has ended with marginally above-normal rainfall. Quantitatively, the rainfall during this season, which officially ended on Friday, was 925mm, or 6 per cent above the long period average (LPA), India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light drizzles in Mumbai till the end of this week and no sign of monsoon retreat from most parts of the city. The maximum city in the past two weeks received light rain.

Pleasant morning in Delhi

The minimum temperature in the national capital settled at 23.7 degrees Celsius, one notch above the normal on Saturday, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin said.

The maximum temperature is expected to settle at 35 degrees Celsius, the bulletin said.

According to the weather department, mainly clear sky is expected during the day. The relative humidity recorded at 8.30 am was 88 per cent.

The air quality index (AQI) of Delhi was recorded in the moderate (154) category around 9:15 am, data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) showed. (PTI)

Southwest monsoon withdraws from most parts of Rajasthan 

The southwest monsoon has withdrawn from most parts of Rajasthan although rainfall is expected in many places, the weather office said.

It is still active in the eastern parts of the Jodhpur division.

Light to moderate rain and thunder and lightning are likely in some parts of Bharatpur, Kota, Udaipur and Jaipur divisions during October 5 and 7.

Rains delay paddy harvesting in parts of Punjab; farm fires to rebound: Experts

With a prolonged spell of rains delaying paddy harvesting in some regions of Punjab, farmers are more likely to burn stubble to make up for the lost time and quickly prepare their fields for the next crop, experts say.

Another weather system is predicted to bring rain in parts of north India between October 4 and October 8, which could further delay harvesting in some areas, forecasters said.

"The rains (last week) delayed paddy harvesting in several areas, especially in Amritsar and Tarn Taran region of Punjab, where farmers grow potato and peas before wheat. It is not an ideal situation," said Dr Mahesh Narang, the head of the farm engineering department at the Punjab Agricultural University. (PTI)

Pleasant morning in Delhi, minimum temperature settles at 23.2 deg C

Delhiites woke up to clear skies on Friday with the minimum temperature settling at 23.2 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The relative humidity registered at 8.30 am was 92 per cent, the IMD said.

The weather office has predicted partly cloudy skies during the day. The maximum temperature is expected to settle at 35 degrees Celsius.

Delhi's air quality index (AQI) was recorded in the 'moderate' (143) category around 9.15 am, System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) data showed. (PTI)

Chandigarh got 898.2 mm rainfall; monsoon ends in UT: Met dept

The southwest monsoon has withdrawn from Chandigarh, the weather department said Thursday.

The city received a total of 898.2 mm rainfall this year, which is more than the previous year. The rainfall was counted from June 1 to September 29 this year.

In 2021, the city had received 735.5 mm rainfall. Besides Chandigarh, the southwest monsoon has completely withdrawn from Punjab and most parts of Haryana except areas of Yamunanagar, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Mewat and Palwal. Read more

Thunderstorms predicted in Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha : IMD

Rain is likely to play spoilsport in Jharkhand during Durga puja with the Met office predicting light to heavy showers from October 2 to October 4.

“The circulation is likely to turn into a low-pressure area by October 2 causing rain in major parts of Jharkhand. The system might impact Jharkhand till October 6. The state is likely to experience light to heavy rainfall till October 4,” Abhishek Anand, in charge of Ranchi Meteorological Centre, told PTI.

For the second consecutive day, Pune city on Friday evening witnessed multiple intense rainfall spells, leading to traffic snarls and severe water-logging. Shivajinagar recorded 35.1mm of rain in under two hours on Friday afternoon.

Gusty winds resulted in trees getting uprooted, worsening vehicular movement along Law College Road, Senapati Bapat Road and other locations in Shivajinagar.

Officials of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, noted rising moisture levels in the city and neighbouring areas due to the prevailing cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, off Andhra Pradesh coast.

Monsoon season ends on a high, India records 6% surplus rain: IMD

The southwest monsoon season over India has ended with marginally above-normal rainfall. Quantitatively, the rainfall during this season, which officially ended on Friday, was 925mm, or 6 per cent above the long period average (LPA), India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said. In June, the IMD predicted the seasonal rainfall to be normal or range between 96-104 per cent of the LPA.

The rainfall in the past four months remained either normal or above over the northwest India (1 per cent), central India (19 per cent) and south peninsular India (22 per cent). This covers a total of 30 states or Union Territories.

Nearly 43 per cent area of the country received normal rainfall and 40 per cent area recorded excess rainfall this season. Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland–the six driest states of this season–accounted for 17 per cent of the country’s rain-deficient areas, the IMD officials said.
