Karnataka Bengaluru News Highlights: Local leaders of PFI and SDPI were taken into preventive custody in different parts of Karnataka Tuesday. According to initial reports, 8-9 leaders in Mangaluru, six in Kolar, seven in Bagalkot, two in Bidar and one in Vijayapura are under preventive custody. Home Minister Araga Jnanendra described it as a precautionary measure and said they had “created a tense situation by protesting in the streets during the recent raids by NIA on their leaders.”
Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu Monday inaugurated the Mysuru Dasara, the ten-day festival which attracts crowds across the globe, and became the first head of the state to do so. Mysuru Dasara, which has more than 400 years of history, is celebrated to mark the local deity Goddess Chamundeshwari’s victory over Mahishasura. Dasara is celebrated for nine days and on the tenth day of Vijaya Dashami, a grand procession is held.
Meanwhile, six Air Force officers have been charged with murder in connection with the death of a former Air Force Technical College (AFTC) trainee. Police in Bengaluru, where the AFTC is based, said no arrests have been made so far and that they are waiting for the post-mortem report.
Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR airport) Tuesday reported that it recorded 52,366 Metric Tonnes (MT) of perishable shipments in FY 2021-22, compared to the previous year’s 48,130 MT.
“41% of South India’s air-cargo perishable tonnage is currently handled by BLR Airport making it the leading airport for perishables in India. Fruits and vegetables along with the export of poultry and flowers have been major segments driving this growth. 36,493 MT of poultry and 1,952 MT of flowers were exported from BLR Airport in FY '22. Doha emerged as the leading destination followed by Singapore, London, and Male. A total of 33 cargo freighter airlines transported perishable shipments from BLR Airport to 85 international destinations in FY '22,” statement from the airport read.
Bengaluru-based Jain University- Centre for Management Studies is hosting a two day international conference on ‘Ethics in Research and Principles of Ethical Journalism and its Impact on Society’. The first day of the conference was conducted today with a keynote address by TR Gopalakrishnan, consulting editor, Citizen Matters who advised students on the importance of ‘revealing the truth’ in journalism and the need to keep a tab with the morning newspapers.
The conference also encouraged the students, scholars, and prospective authors to present their research papers and case studies with the aim of identifying challenges of research ethics, understanding the impact of ethics, elaborating the needs and demands of ethical journalism, and analyzing ethical and legal inadequacies.

A day before a public consultation meeting on the Hubballi-Ankola railway is set to be held, a basic science researcher based out of Uttara Kannada district, Ravi Hegde, has submitted a list of objections against the railway project to the office of the deputy commissioner of the district.
The Union environment ministry on June 3 this year had set up a seven-member committee to examine the project. The team is on a visit to the district. The project requires the conversion of 594.64 hectare of forest land.
Hegde said that the proposed Hubballi-Ankola railway track project is not mandatory for human survival but the tropical rainforest habitat is essential for the survival of the rarest of the rare population of endemic and endangered flora and fauna of the Western Ghats.
Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy Tuesday asked the government to reveal the reasons for the raids on Popular Front of India (PFI) leaders.
“If the (state) government fails to do so, we will have to believe that these raids are being conducted to divert attention from the allegations of corruption against the government,” the former chief minister said.
“The government should reveal the details of the discoveries made and other documents to the people of the state. If they fail to reveal the truth behind the raids, people will suspect that these raids are being made to divert attention from the ‘PayCM’ campaign of the Congress,” he said. Read More.
The headmaster of a government school in Karnataka’s Gadag district was allegedly heckled by activists of Sri Rama Sene, a Right-wing outfit, Tuesday after he asked the students to write an essay on Prophet Muhammed. The activists also accused the headmaster of facilitating religious conversion of the students.
The incident took place in the Government High School in Nagavi village. The activists barged into the school and heckled headmaster Abdul Munafar Bijapur, leaving the rest of the people in the school of 172 students “in a state of shock”. Kiran Parashar reports.

Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar on Tuesday appealed to Rahul Gandhi to take over as the party's national president in this "hour of crisis" and to "save" it.

The Hon’ble Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh today presented the award to Mr L Ramakrishnan, Chief Scientist of BEL’s Central Research Laboratory (CRL)-Bangalore and Dr Ramesh Chaveli, Principal Scientist (CRL-Bangalore) at the awards ceremony organised in New Delhi.
BEL is the only DPSU selected for this award. The jury headed by Dr Sivathanu Pillai included retired senior officers from the armed forces, among others. BEL has won the award against stiff competition from large private sector companies.

A local court in Karnataka’s Chitradurga on Tuesday extended for 14 days the judicial custody of Shivamurthy Sharanaru, the Murugha mutt pontiff arrestedfor the alleged sexual assault of two minor students.
The Chitradurga court extended the pontiff’s judicial custody till October 10. The judicial custody of the warden, another accused in the case, was also extended till October 10.
Meanwhile, sources close to the mutt said that they are scheduled to hold a meeting on September 29 to decide whether Sharanaru must step down from the pontiff position or continue. The National Investigating Agency (NIA) has a warrant against only the Popular Front of India (PFI). The residents of Jayanagar in Karnataka’s Bengaluru are irked by the constant use of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) public playground (Shalini Grounds) in fifth block of the locality for commercial purposes.
Several residents gathered Sunday in Jayanagar to protest against Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya for permitting week-long commercial exhibitions multiple times and depriving the children and sports enthusiasts from using the playground for sports.
The residents allege that despite several requests to the civic agencies, the MP and Jaynagar MLA Soumya Reddy, the playground is being extensively used for non sporting activities which has led to deterioration of the cricket pitch and degraded the ground quality. Read More.

Karnataka’s government-owned KC General Hospital in Bengaluru was awarded the ‘Ayushman Utkrishtata Puraskaar’ by the National Health Authority (NHA) at the Arogya Manthan 2022 held in Delhi Monday, for linking the highest number of patient health records to Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), said Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar in a statement Monday.
Over 8,450 health records at the hospital have been linked to ABHA.

President Draoupadi Murmur inaugurated an Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility (ICMF) set up by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) that is said to cater for the entire rocket engine production of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai inaugurated a manufacturing unit of Exide Energy Solutions in Bengaluru. The unit has come up at an 80-acre plot at the Aerospace Park, near Devanhalli.
In a temporary relief for around 490 students of the Nehru English High School in Bengaluru’s Shivaji Nagar, the Karnataka High Court Monday stayed the seizure of the school building by the state government till October 27.
On Sunday, the government had attached the school building after it came to light that the owner of the school, Mansoor Khan, had allegedly duped depositors to the tune of around Rs 4,000 crore in a ponzi scam.
The private unaided school was established in 1964 and is managed by the I Monetary Advisory (IMA) which is owned by Khan. Read More.
A number of office-bearers and members of the Popular Front of India (PFI) were taken into custody from across Karnataka, after raids at their offices and residences, police sources said on Tuesday.
The crackdown came close on the heels of raids by the National Investigation Agency in different parts of the country including Karnataka last week.

Karnataka police have arrested eight persons who allegedly attacked Kalaburgi (Rrural) police inspector Srimanth Illala when he reportedly went to arrest ganja growers. Home Minister Araga Jnanendra on Tuesday said that they recovered the service revolver of the officer which the accused had snatched during the raid.
Srimanth Illala was airlifted from Unity Hospital in Kalaburagi to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru. The Minister said that the officer is yet to gain consciousness and the treatment is continuing.

The State has been granted 12 more weeks by the High Court of Karnataka to complete the exercise of delimitation in Taluk and Zilla Panchayats and to complete the exercise of providing reservation to SC, ST, and OBC categories.
The court on May 24 this year granted 12 weeks to the State to complete the process. But the Delimitation Commission on September 19 wrote to the government that it needs three more months to complete the process. (PTI)
Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar on Monday rejected allegations that his party was targeting Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai with the 'PayCM' campaign, because the latter is a Lingayat.
He said the Chief Minister is targeted, as he is the head of the government and will have to bear responsibility for its deeds.
"Has he (Bommai) become the Chief Minister on the basis of his Lingayat caste? He is in power as per the Constitution. We are targeting the government and he is the head of the government," Shivakumar told reporters. (PTI)

As the Bharat Jodo Yatra entered Palakkad district, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday met the leaders and representatives from tribal communities, particularly from Attapadi in the district.
The interaction started with a song on unity dedicated by the delegation to the Bharat Jodo Yatra. During the interaction, one of the representatives expressed the need to set up coaching centres for competitive exams in tribal areas.
A doctor from the community practicing tribal medicine, asked for tribal medicine to be included into AYUSH and raised the need for mentorship programmes to prevent school and college dropouts among tribal students.

The appointment of a new vice chancellor (VC) for Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has hit controversy from the word go. While former vice-chancellors alleged irregularities such as ‘favoritism’ in appointing the new VC, on the other hand a complaint has been registered at Karnataka Lokayukta for dereliction of duty against the registrar and the former vice chancellor of VTU for taking ‘major policy decisions’ at the end of the VC tenure.
However, the search committee of VTU shortlisted three candidates on Saturday for the VC chair which includes Anand Deshpande, Vidyashankar S and Gopal Mugeray. Soon after the shortlisted candidates names were out, allegations of corruption and criminal charges surfaced from certain corners.
Dr K Mahadev, an orthopedic surgeon and the member of planning, monitoring and evaluation board of University of Mysore alleges that Vidyahshankar who is the vice-chancellor of Karnataka State Open University has many criminal cases against him. In fact Mahadev has also filed a petition (a copy of which is with IE.com) in the Karnataka High Court, in May this year accusing Vidyashankar of malpractice and corruption.

Mysuru, Sept 26: President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated Dasara festivities by offering floral tributes to the deity, Chamundeshwari, atop Chamundi hills near Mysuru Monday. In her address, Murmu said the Mysuru Dasara festival represents Indian culture and tradition.
Stating that Karnataka is a land of spirituality, the President said that Jainism and Buddhism thrived in the state, and Adi Shankaracharya established the Sringeri mutt here. Murmu also mentioned the influence of Sufi culture in Kalaburagi, and Anubhava Mantapa of 12th-century social reformer Basavanna.

An accidental call from a coin booth has helped the Bengaluru police locate three high school girls who ran away from their homes in Karnataka earlier this month. They were found working at a Chennai factory on September 23, police said Monday.
While one of the teenagers–from St Joseph’s Convent Girls High School–was unhappy about her stepmother, another was peeved with her stepfather and the third had been disciplined by her parents for talking to her boyfriend, according to police.
Police said an astrologer had advised the first girl to be careful. “Her father has two wives and she was the daughter of his second wife. Wary of her stepmother, the girl feared she was in some sort of danger,” an officer involved in the investigation said. Soon after they ran away from home on September 6. Read More.
The Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the state government to furnish written submissions in the petition challenging the probe in the alleged video-leak extortion case of former minister Ramesh Jarkiholi.
A sexual assault complaint was filed against Jarkiholi after a video got leaked and telecast on some news channels in February 2021. It led to his resignation as minister. Jarkiholi filed a counter-complaint alleging that the video was leaked to blackmail him. The alleged victim and two others were accused by him. (PTI)

The High Court of Karnataka on Monday heard a petition by microblogging platform Twitter against the Central government's orders asking it to block some accounts, URLs and tweets.
Twitter had challenged the orders on grounds of violation of freedom of speech and the authorities not issuing notice to the alleged violators before asking Twitter to take down content.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had on September 1 filed a 101-page statement of objection to Twitter's petition. (PTI)
Bengaluru-based Ashoka Trust for Research and the Environment (ATREE) Monday said that its researchers have initiated the restoration of the Thamirabarani river, which originates from the Pothigai hills of the Western Ghats in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
ATREE has associated with Indian Institute of Human Settlements (IIHS) Bengaluru, Consortium for DEWATS Dissemination Society and the Tirunelveli district administration for the restoration project named TamiraSES. President Droupadi Murmu on Monday called upon countrymen to resolve for making India fully developed and "Aatmanirbhar" (self-reliant) by the time the nation celebrates centenary year of its independence. The President was addressing at a felicitation function ‘Poura Sanmana' (civic honour) organised by the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation in her honour.
"The whole country is celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (75 years of Independence), this celebration will be incomplete without paying respects to and remembering our great freedom fighters, who laid down their lives for the freedom of the motherland. I pay my respects to them," Murmu said. (PTI)

Nagesh said, "The stand taken by the government was upheld by the three-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court. The Karnataka Education Act clearly says no religious practice can be allowed in the school. So how come six students, who were following the rules and regulations of the Act all along, suddenly felt they had to wear the hijab the next day onwards? Who supported them? We fought only to uphold the Act."
