IN THE second attack on Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police personnel in less than two weeks, a constable was killed while his nine-year-old daughter was injured when suspected militants opened fire on them outside their house in Soura, on the outskirts of Srinagar, on Tuesday afternoon.

The policeman has been identified as Saifullah Qadri, 45. Police sources said Qadri was going to drop his daughter for her tuition classes when they were attacked.

Qadri and his daughter were rushed to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar, where he succumbed to his injuries. Police sources said his daughter suffered a bullet injury in her hand, and is in a stable condition.

“Today at about 1700hrs, police received information about a terror crime incident in Soura area of Srinagar where terrorists fired upon a police personnel. Officers attending the crime spot learnt that terrorists had fired indiscriminately upon one police personnel namely SgCt (senior grade constable) Saifullah Qadri, son of Mohammad Syed Qadri, resident of Ganai Mohalla Anchar outside his house,” J&K Police said in a statement.

Qadri is the second policeman to be killed in the Valley in less than a fortnight. On May 13, militants shot a policeman, Riyaz Ahmad Thoker, at his village of Gudoora in Pulwama.

“I strongly condemn the cowardly terror attack in Soura, Srinagar. I assure the people that those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished,” J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha tweeted.

Former Chief Minister and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah also “unequivocally condemned” the attack.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, and other top officials attended a wreath-laying ceremony for the slain policeman at the District Police Lines in Srinagar in the evening.
