CSK vs MI, IPL 2021 Highlights: Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by 20 runs in the first match of the second phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL), on Sunday. Electing to bat, Chennai Super Kings scored 156/6 against the defending champions. CSK were 44/4 at halfway mark after a horrendous start but Ruturaj Gaikwad rescued the side with his blistering unbeaten knock of 88 runs along with Ravindra Jadeja (26) and Dwayne Barvo, who scored 23.
Chasing a tricky target of 157, Mumbai faltered early losing three wickets in the PowerPlay. Saurabh Tiwary scored a fifty but never managed to get any support from the other batsmen around him. Mumbai was ultimately restricted to 136/8 in their quota of 20 overs.

136/8 (20.0)Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians by 20 runs
Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians in the first IPL 2021 match in UAE. What a turnaround this games has been, remember at one stage CSK were 7-3 but then made an amazing recovery to script a 20-run win. Chennai scored 39 runs in the last two overs. Mumbai needed the same in the last 2. This shows how even a couple of good overs can decide the fate of the game.
Dwayne Bravo has picks up two wickets in the last over. Adam Milne and Rahul Chahar. So no dramatic ending in this game. Meanwhile, Saurabh Tiwary has reached his fifty. Just a formality now...
A big hit from the willow of Saurabh Tiwary and could not have come at a better time. MI- 133/6 after 19 overs. MI need 24 off the final over. Can Saurabh Tiwary take his team over the line?
Saurabh Tiwary goes for the scoop and gets a leading-edge. Bravo, at short fine leg was gearing up for it but Dhoni comes in at the last minute and goes for it! And he drops! MI -118/6 after 18 ovs
Deepak Chahar has done some damage to his left calf, pulling out of his run-up. Anyway, some leg-shaking and some of Raina's massaging allows him to continue, even without the physio. The equation: 49 runs | 18 balls.
Poor call between the two southpaws as Krunal played one towards the mid-wicket region and was down the pitch but there was no single there. Tiwary is slow and doesn't even try. Bravo with a quick throw and Dhoni whips the bails. Time-out. The equation: 60 runs | 30 balls.
Hazlewood has caught Pollard plumb in front. The big man went for the review but its a hopeless call. Three reds. Pollard is gone for 15(14). Mumbai Indians have won 10 of their last 11 chases(with 1 tie) in the IPL, Chennai Super Kings look primed to end that unbeaten streak here.
Virat Kohli will step down as RCB's skipper at the end of this season. He has stolen the limelight tonight for sure!
Pollard power is here! And he hammers Jadeja for a six! More of a mishit but the ball has landed over long-on. 13 runs from the 11th over. MI- 75/4 and need 82 more to win. Pollard vs CSK will be an interesting contest and maybe the final one that needs to be won to secure this win.
Ishan finds the fielder at short cover against Bravo and he is disappointed. He knows he should not have played that uppish shot on the off. The fielder was placed right there for that shot. Alas! He has fallen into that trap. Superb field placement from MSD. MI- 58/4
Six singles in the ninth over from Moeen Ali before the time-out! MI- 54/3 after 9 overs. Kieron Pollard, sitting in the dugout, can be seen biting his nails. Remember he averages 42.61 and scores at 10.51 rpo against Chennai Super Kings in his IPL career. When will he come out to bat?
This time it is Shardul Thakur who gets into the act and enters his name in the wickets column. Suryakumar Yadav didn't get enough pace to play the lofted shot and is caught by Du Plessis. He has to depart for 3 off 7 deliveries! CSK lost three wickets in their PowerPlay. In response MI after 6 overs are 41/3, as they chase 157 to win
Deepak Chahar cleans up Anmolpreet Singh and what a wonderful piece of deception with the knuckle ball. Anmolpreet had no clue about it and was into his shot quite early. He has to depart for 16 after getting a good start. MI - 35/2 after 5 ovs
4-6-4 !!! Anmolpreet Singh is on fire! A swipe across the line and Anmolpreet gets his first maximum of the match. Anmolpreet Singh, on debut, hits Josh Hazlewood for 14 off the over! This quite a start. MI - 34/1 after 4 overs
The Dhoni Review System has come alive! Dhoni spot on with that review and Quinton de Kock has to walk back to the pavilion. MI- 20/1 after 3 ovs
Gaikwad is the culprit! That was a tough chance but you need to take those at this level. QDK gets a life as Gaikwad spills a chance on the dive. And adding insult to injury smashes a boundary of the next ball. Hazlewood isn't happy. MI- 14/0 after 2 overs
A Shot of Highest Quality from Ruturaj Gaikwad
Anmolpreet Singh opens with Quinton de Kock. Chahar will open the attack for CSK and its a quiet start with just two runs of the first over.
" I'm very tired right now, but proud that I carried the innings for my team. My job was just to bat long at that stage (when they lost early wickets). You always have to start fresh, it's good to get off to a great start. It's a two-paced wicket and there's a bit of turn for the spinners as well."
88* Ruturaj Gaikwad Dubai 2021
86* Michael Hussey Delhi 2013
83* Suresh Raina Mumbai BS 2010
After a plethora of sixes, three in fact, Chennai up their run-rate in style in the penultimate over. Gaikwad (88*) and Bravo (23) punish Boult for 24 runs but Bumrah exacts revenge on the latter with a wicket in the final over. But Gaikwad bites back with a lofted cover drive for a four later on. A six by Gaikwad on the final ball. CSK: 156/6 (20 overs)
It was relief that screamed on Suresh Raina’s face after he mis-sliced what looked like a jailbreak attempt to escape his six-ball torment. The stroke was hideous (to understate it). Raina just backed away, all three stumps in full view, and just slammed his bat at the ball, in hope that it would somehow miss everything, or like two balls before, brush his edge to the boundary. But this ball was fuller and shaping away from him. He was perhaps anticipating a short ball. The blind slash ballooned airily into the point’s hands, putting an end to his misery. The previous five balls were Raina-Down-Under throwback, where his old weakness against the short-pitch ball into his body was ruthlessly re-examined. He was hopping and hustling at the crease. He seemed genuinely spooked out, and in the end, it was relief that his mental agony was not prolonged.

Bravo ups the ante with a six! Milne puts pressure on early but he thumps it over deep cover. CSK: 117/5 (18 overs)
Breakthrough for the champions! Bumrah breaks the 81-run partnership as he scalps the wicket of Jadeja (26). Just when things were going great for Chennai, with Gaikwad (63) hitting two fours and a six, they lose a wicket. Jadeja slices the delivery and hits it high... Pollard takes the catch at long-off. Next up, Dwayne Bravo. CSK: 105/5 (16.4 overs)
Mumbai keep their foot on the pedal as they continue to apply pressure on Jadeja (25*) and Gaikwad (46*). Bumrah replaces Krunal and concedes just seven runs in his second over. Chahar continues to spin a web and restricts the batsmen from hitting a boundary. Into the final five! Can Chennai post a challenging total? CSK: 87/4 (15 overs)
Ruturaj Gaikwad begins Krunal Pandya's over with a six! Then Jadeja gets a boundary and finally the over ends with a reverse sweep from Gaikwad which fetches another boundary. Great execution from Gaikwad. 18 runs from the over! CSK- 66/4 after 12 overs
Slowly but surely, CSK are rebuilding with Ruturaj and Jadeja at the crease. However, Gaikwad was given a life when he was dropped by De Kock in the previous over. Could have been 35/5 for CSK. 10 overs gone, they are 44/4
This is the 10th time CSK have lost four or more wickets in an IPL powerplay. Four of them have come against Mumbai Indians
MS Dhoni goes for a pull and is holed out at deep square leg! This is a disaster for Chennai. Milne gets his second and Boult takes a good catch. 2 each for Boult and Milne! Chennai Super Kings 24/4 today is the second-lowest score in the Powerplay in IPL 2021.
"Dhoni.. Dhoni... Dhoni in the stadium" - loud cheers in the stadium as CSK's Thala walks out inside the PowerPlay. Mahendra Singh Dhoni batting higher up the order is a wonderful sign for CSK. " In the absence of Rohit and Pandya, I thought CSK started favourites but looks like MI are back to the power play form from last year," says Harsha Bhogle on social media
Suresh Raina is caught by Rahul Chahar for 4 and CSK are in deep trouble. He went for the big hit and miscued it completely, as the bottom end of his blade comes off in the process.
Looks like Rayudu is in some discomfort after that blow. The physio is out to attend him. Well well! He's walking off the field. Suresh Raina walks in to bat. Not an auspicious start for Chennai.
Saurabh Tiwary takes a spectacular catch to dismiss Moeen Ali. This was another shorter one from the bowler and Moeen Ali tried to slap it across the infield but is holed out at cover. CSK - 2/2 (1.3)
Faf has been dismissed for nought in the first over by Boult! Slightly short ball outside off and Faf went for it and gets the outside edge | CSK - 1/1 (0.5)
Boult with the new ball in hand and its Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis at the crease for CSK. Gaikwad is on strike. Let's Play!! An appeal for LBW on the second ball but the umpire is not interested. Excitement early on!

'We weren't so sure, so happy that I lost the toss. Rohit is okay, he'll be fine sooner rather than later, I'm just the captain for today. We started a couple of months back. Rohit misses out, Hardik is not playing as well. Anmolpreet makes his debut, that's about it, all others are regular players.'
"Setting a target will be a better option. It's the same for everyone. I can't say if it's a good break or not. Once the tournament starts, you get into some sort of rhythm but this season it's new and maybe us cricketers will start loving it. Seven games, then a break, and seven more. It comes down to how you play on that day in the shortest form. We'll try to do the basics right and focus on the process. Sam is not available. Faf, Moeen, Bravo and Josh are playing this game."
MS Dhoni calls correctly and he has elected to bat first. No Rohit for MI as he is unfit for the game. Pollard will be the captain for the day.
Jasprit Bumrah is playing his 100th match for the Mumbai Indians today.
Rohit Sharma does not look fully fit and there's a chance that he might miss today's game. Faf du Plessis is fit and is available for today's game.
The surface at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium is a hard one and the conditions are warm. So win the toss and chase is what Kevin Pietersen suggests. The pace bowlers picked most of the wickets on this track in 2020.
Dwayne Bravo has a groin injury and has not bowled recently. Hazlewood is the better seam bowling option than Lungi Ngidi. More on CSK Playing XI
This powerful battery will be flexible in the order in which they come to the crease and can deal with any situation – be it early wickets or need to raise the tempo. No cause is lost with such a line-up at a team’s disposal. More on MI Playing XI
