Speaking to reporters on Sunday evening, the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) national spokesperson said the nation will never forget the violence that took place in Tikunia village on this day last year and claimed eight lives.

Observing the first anniversary of the death of five people — four farmers and one journalist — in Lakhimpur Kheri, farm leaders Monday reiterated their demand for the sacking of Union Minister of State (Home) Ajay Kumar Mishra, whose son Ashish is the prime accused.

Families of the deceased farmers organised a programme at Tikunia crossing where a convoy of three SUVs, including a Thar owned by Ajay Mishra, ran over a group of protesting farmers a year ago. A memorial was also held at the local gurudwara which was attended by Bhartiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait.

“We have not forgotten the Lakhimpur Kheri case nor will allow the government to forget it. Five persons were killed in the incident. Their families are yet to get justice. Justice will be possible for them only when Union minister Ajay Mishra is dismissed from his position,” Tikait told The Indian Express.

Tikait said that their demand for Mishra’s sacking will also be raised during the proposed nationwide agitation of Samyukt Kisan Morcha on November 26. Tikait also extended to give Rs 2 lakh to each of the families of the four arrested farmers.

Meanwhile, the Congress attacked the government over the Lakhimpur Kheri incident and accused the ruling BJP of trying to protect the farmers. “One year has passed, but the martyred farmers of Lakhimpur Kheri did not get justice. The reason is same — BJP, as always, is protecting criminals,” Rahul Gandhi, who is currently undertaking the Bharat Jodo Yatra tweeted.

Festive offer

Gandhi also added that the farmers’ agitation was a big inspiration for the Congress when it decided to take out the Bharat Jodo Yatra. “This struggle will not end without ensuring justice to the farmers,” he added.
